Cathy Nordström presents Trove - a collection of gathered treasures
Swedish pattern designer Cathy Nordström launches Trove Collection, a new line of textiles and wallpapers born from an unexpected discovery: an archive of books documenting centuries of craftsmanship from around the world.
The idea for the collection was born while contemplating an online auction. Nordström placed a bid on a box of books without knowing exactly what was inside. Upon arrival, she uncovered a vast collection of art books, textile references, museum publications, and carefully documented examples of ceramics, rugs, murals, and decorative crafts spanning Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Russia.
Rather than recreating historical motifs, Nordström used the archive as a starting point for creating five entirely original patterns by hand. The result is a collection designed to be layered and combined, reflecting her signature approach to colour, composition, and timeless interiors.
“The challenge was never finding inspiration. This collection contains centuries of it. The challenge was knowing where to stop,” Cathy Nordström.
Trove Collection comprises five patterns across textiles and wallpaper, each starting as a hand-painted artwork before being traditionally screen printed.
- Ingrid reinterprets vintage embroidery motifs with a restrained, contemporary expression.
- Iteru, named after the ancient Egyptian word for river, is inspired by an archaeological fragment and printed using five separate screens.
- Dutch Dot references the decorative corners of classic Delft tiles in a small-scale geometric design.
- Rakel Stripe celebrates the handmade through expressive, irregular stripes influenced by antique ceramics and Japanese indigo textiles.
- Flora brings together a single nostalgic floral motif inspired by a 1950s fabric, designed to pair effortlessly with the rest of the collection.
