Elisabeth Frieberg Brings Art to Stockholm Open

Art and tennis meet at this year’s Bybit Stockholm Open, where Swedish artist Elisabeth Frieberg presents a site-specific installation spanning 108 square metres at the Kungl. Tennishallen. Created especially for the tournament, which takes place from 7 to 14 November, the work comprises twelve paintings, each measuring three by three metres.

Titled NOTES, VIHAMANAAFUSHI, INDIAN OCEAN, NO. 2, the installation is the second chapter in Frieberg’s ongoing colour chart series. Its origins lie on the Maldivian island of Vihamanaafushi, where observations of underwater life during snorkelling excursions became the starting point for an exploration of colour, movement and organic form. Working with a spray gun and compressor, Frieberg translates the rhythms and patterns of marine life into compositions that move between intricate detail and monumental scale. The result is an immersive installation conceived in direct response to its architectural setting.

“I love tennis and crazy projects, otherwise I wouldn’t have taken this on,” says Frieberg. “I always think about how a work functions in a space, and in a hall this large, an ordinary painting can look like a postage stamp. Here, I had the opportunity to give the colour chart room to breathe and create an experience for visitors.”

The installation will be presented in the tournament’s new annex. Frieberg is also currently making her US debut at LnS Gallery in Miami. Following Stockholm Open, the twelve works will be available for purchase through ANNA BOHMAN GALLERY.
