Timberland x Jacquemus: The Boat Shoe Gets a Fashion Forward Makeover
Two distinct design worlds meet as Timberland and Jacquemus revisit an outdoor classic, introducing a crocodile inspired finish to the iconic Authentic Boat Shoe.
Some designs are so firmly rooted in fashion history that reinventing them requires a careful balance between familiarity and surprise. For their latest collaboration, Timberland and Jacquemus take on the challenge with a new interpretation of the Authentic Boat Shoe, bringing together the American brand’s rugged heritage and the French label’s playful approach to contemporary design. First introduced in 1978, Timberland’s Authentic Boat Shoe has long transcended its original outdoor purpose. Recognisable for its practical construction and timeless silhouette, it has become a wardrobe staple that moves effortlessly between settings and styles. Now, under the creative direction of Jacquemus, the classic takes on a more unexpected character. The latest collaboration introduces two colourways, Brown Croc and Navy Croc, both defined by an embossed leather finish inspired by crocodile skin. The textured surface lends the familiar silhouette a more polished, fashion conscious feel, creating an intriguing contrast between the shoe’s laid back, countryside associations and the refined language of luxury leather goods.
It is this tension that makes the collaboration interesting. Timberland’s designs have always been grounded in function, durability and an unmistakable outdoor aesthetic, while Jacquemus is known for bringing a fresh, often playful perspective to established fashion codes. Rather than abandoning the original design, the two brands allow their identities to meet through material, colour and detail. The construction remains faithful to the shoe’s heritage. Crafted from embossed Premium Timberland leather, the design retains its signature rugged rubber outsole, while a soft leather lining and padded collar introduce comfort. A tonal tree logo and bespoke branded aglets provide understated finishing touches, reflecting the collaboration’s attention to detail without overwhelming the silhouette. The result feels both familiar and new. The proportions and functional elements of the original boat shoe remain intact, while the crocodile inspired texture gives it a different attitude. Brown Croc offers a rich, earthy interpretation that stays close to the shoe’s traditional roots, while Navy Croc introduces a cooler, more contemporary alternative.
Beyond the product itself, the collaboration speaks to a wider conversation in fashion about the reinvention of classics. Rather than creating something entirely new, Timberland and Jacquemus demonstrate how a shift in texture and perspective can transform an established design. Practicality becomes a starting point for experimentation, and an everyday icon takes on a more expressive role. With this latest release, the partnership continues to explore the space between heritage and modernity, proving that even the most familiar silhouettes can take on a new life when viewed through a different creative lens.
