Music has long held an outsized influence in Scandinavia. The region may be relatively small in population, but its artists, producers, and songwriters have shaped global listening for decades. At home, the market remains deeply engaged. According to IFPI Sweden, Swedish recorded music sales grew by three per cent in 2025 to more than SEK 2.3 billion, with streaming accounting for 94 per cent of the market. The figures reveal the commercial scale, but only part of the story. Music also creates community. It influences language, nightlife, image, and the way a generation sees itself. In an increasingly digital market, festivals offer something streaming cannot: a physical place where taste becomes visible. At the centre of Zalando’s presence at Way Out West was The Corner, an immersive cultural space returning for its second year. Zalando’s wider partnership with Way Out West is now in its fifth consecutive year, but this edition felt particularly focused on bringing digital storytelling and physical experience together.

Way Out West’s cultural identity is also shaped by the values it chooses to make visible. Since 2012, the festival has served an entirely vegetarian and largely dairy-free food offering. According to the organisers, the decision reduced its emissions by 40 per cent, while 15 per cent of visitors say they eat more vegetarian food after attending. What is striking is how naturally that choice now sits within the experience. Vegetarian food is not presented as a compromise or a side note. It is simply part of the festival’s language. The same sense of intention extends to its emphasis on social responsibility and inclusion. Progress is not positioned outside culture here. It is built into the way culture is experienced. That may be the most relevant lesson from the weekend. The Scandinavian market responds to brands and institutions that understand culture as a connected ecosystem. Music cannot be separated from fashion, just as style cannot be separated from values, community, or the places where people come together.
Way Out West, see you again next year!
