Nymans Ur Opens a New Chapter in Stockholm

With watchmakers behind glass, interiors inspired by watchmaking and room to settle in, Nymans Ur’s new flagship at Norrmalmstorg gives Stockholm a reason to take its time.

If I were to compare Nymans Ur’s new Stockholm flagship to a watch, it would be a mechanical timepiece with an exhibition caseback. Beautifully considered on the outside, with an invitation to look closer at the craftsmanship within. Here, that invitation is quite literal: watchmakers work behind glass, bringing a usually hidden world into view.
Opened on 14 October at Smålandsgatan 16, the two-storey flagship marks a new chapter for the family-owned business, whose history stretches back to 1851. Developed with Hultman-Vogt and Daniel Östman Interiors, it brings architecture, hospitality and watchmaking together in a setting designed to reward curiosity.
The connection to watches runs through the interior itself. Rounded lines and bespoke details meet natural oak, walnut, glass and stainless steel, while Nymans Ur’s signature blue threads through a palette of grey and white. Handles and furniture have been designed specifically for the space, as has a patterned carpet that softens the harder materials.
A watch asks us to notice proportions, finishes and the way individual elements fit together. Those same considerations shape the boutique, from its curved forms to the relationship between its materials.
At its centre, a generous atrium and sculptural staircase connect the two floors. Drawing inspiration from hotels, restaurants and galleries, the architects have balanced the atrium’s scale with smaller, more intimate spaces. Upstairs, a lounge, coffee bar, private room, kitchen and dining area create a setting for quiet conversations and private gatherings.
For me, though, the most compelling detail is the visibility of the watchmakers. Watching skilled hands at work offers another way into understanding an object: the patience it requires, the knowledge behind it and the attention involved in keeping it running. A service desk also provides direct access to advice, simpler service requests and function testing.
The opening brings changes to the selection, too. Cartier returns to Nymans Ur, while Swedish watchmaker Sjöö Sandström joins for the first time. H. Moser & Cie. and L’Epée are also introduced, with Nymans Ur becoming their exclusive retailer in Sweden. They join a roster including Rolex, Vacheron Constantin, Jaeger-LeCoultre and Grand Seiko, alongside jewellery and certified pre-owned watches.
Further expansion is already planned for 2027, when a dedicated Rolex space will open in the adjoining premises towards Biblioteksgatan.
For now, the pleasure lies in the details. Much like the workings visible through the back of a mechanical watch, they give you a reason to keep looking.
