Time and Speed, Reunited: Breitling and Aston Martin Present Top Time Tribute to Iconic DB5
Introduced in 1963, one of the world’s most iconic on-screen cars, the Aston Martin DB5, became synonymous with British culture, design, and innovation, firmly establishing Aston Martin as one of Britain’s most desirable luxury brands. Today, Breitling and Aston Martin proudly bring that shared legacy to the wrist with the Top Time B01 Chronograph 41 Tribute to Aston Martin DB5, presented in three distinct limited editions.
Some collaborations are driven by marketing. Others feel almost inevitable. Breitling’s latest Top Time Tribute to Aston Martin DB5 belongs firmly to the latter, revisiting one of the most enduring intersections of automotive and watch design—a story that began long before luxury collaborations became commonplace.
In 1965, Sean Connery’s James Bond wore a Breitling Top Time ref. 2002 in Thunderball, alongside the now legendary Aston Martin DB5. The pairing became more than a cinematic detail; it captured the optimism and modernity of the era, where engineering, elegance, and speed defined a new generation of design. It was also the first Q-modified watch to appear in the Bond franchise, quietly cementing the Top Time’s place in both horological and film history.
Nearly six decades later, Breitling returns to that cultural moment with a collection that looks beyond nostalgia. Rather than recreating the past, the new Top Time Tribute to Aston Martin DB5 interprets the spirit of the original through contemporary craftsmanship, translating the tactile language of the British grand tourer into the world of Swiss watchmaking.
The dialogue between the two design houses is evident throughout. A cushion-shaped case recalls the original 1960s Top Time, while the distinctive “squircle” chronograph registers reference the instrument cluster of the DB5. The most striking detail, however, is the wooden inner ring surrounding the dial—a subtle nod to the handcrafted wooden steering wheel found inside Aston Martin’s iconic grand tourer. Completing the composition are hand-coloured gradient leather straps inspired by the depth and richness of vintage automotive upholstery.
“The Aston Martin DB5 is one of those rare designs that never fades. It still feels as relevant today as it did in the 1960s,” says Georges Kern, CEO of House of Brands, which oversees Breitling, Universal Genève and Gallet. “With this Top Time, we capture that sense of timeless style.”
For Aston Martin, the project represents more than a licensing exercise. It is a meeting of two disciplines where proportion, materiality and precision carry equal importance.
“These editions represent something truly distinct from anything we’ve created before,” says Marek Reichman, Executive Vice President and Chief Creative Officer at Aston Martin. “The collaboration with Breitling brought together two brands with a shared appreciation for timeless design, craftsmanship and innovation.”
That philosophy extends to the three distinct interpretations of the watch. The stainless-steel edition, limited to 1,022 pieces, offers the closest visual connection to the original Top Time with its silver dial and understated elegance. A second version combines steel with a platinum bezel and a black lacquer dial, creating a sharper, more architectural expression through material contrast. At the pinnacle of the collection sits an 18-karat red gold edition, limited to just 250 individually numbered examples, distinguished by Breitling’s first-ever dial crafted from natural onyx. The stone’s unique depth and organic pattern ensure that every piece is subtly different.
Behind each model is the Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01, the brand’s flagship in-house chronograph movement. COSC-certified and equipped with a column-wheel mechanism, vertical clutch and a 70-hour power reserve, the movement balances technical performance with everyday reliability. Through the sapphire caseback, the calibre is visible beneath a specially engraved Aston Martin rotor—finished in either rhodium plating or matching 18-karat red gold depending on the edition.
What makes the Top Time Tribute to Aston Martin DB5 particularly compelling is its restraint. Instead of relying on overt branding, the collection expresses the partnership through thoughtful details and shared design values. The references to the DB5 are tactile rather than literal, allowing the watch to stand confidently on its own while rewarding those familiar with one of Britain’s most celebrated automobiles.
In an era where heritage is often repackaged as nostalgia, Breitling and Aston Martin instead remind us why certain objects achieve icon status in the first place. They are defined not simply by performance or aesthetics, but by the enduring quality of their design. The Top Time Tribute to Aston Martin DB5 is less a commemorative piece than a continuation of a conversation that began in the 1960s—one where precision, craftsmanship and timeless style remain perfectly in sync.
